Private Label Cannabis Expo (PLCE) is the biggest gathering of private label (or white label) cannabis buyers in the US market who are looking to create their cannabis brand from concept to product or looking to expand their current product supplier base.

“The cannabis industry will never be smaller than today,” notes ArcView Market Research’s website. The firm predicts the legal cannabis market “is expected to grow from the$6.7 billion market value of 2016 and at a robust 27% CAGR to $22.6 billion in 2021. That 20+% annual growth rate is likely to continue for many years past 2021 as more states and countries legalize cannabis.”
The medical cannabis business is also blooming in Canada, where it’s projected to exceed $8 billion within seven years, according to a recent Marijuana Business Daily story. The article cites, “a recent analysis by Eight Capital, a Toronto-based investment bank, [that] targets the potential Canadian international medical cannabis market at a staggering $142 billion over the next 15 years.”
In the September issue of Whole Foods Magazine, a trade publication geared towards the natural foods industry (and not affiliated with Whole Foods Markets), the president of a private-label manufacturer told the publication the private label often is “15-25% lower than national brand pricing before our own volume discounts,” and that “your gross margin is strikingly higher.”
“A retailer can make a 70 percent gross margin or more (i.e., retail $1, the cost 30 cents) if you price the private label at a comparable national brand price,” he said.
The white-label approach in the food industry lets retailers engage in strategic variable pricing, letting them deeply discount popular items but keep less in-demand products at a higher price. Given the lower prices to stock white-label products, it also gives retailers the option to still “discount” the private-label option significantly, compared to other brands, yet still make a sizable gross margin. At the same time, other stores place a premium on the private-label line, revolving marketing campaigns around their high quality and charging more than other brands.
